[See how it works](https://nextbriefcase.com/how-it-works)

Home, work, family, caregiving, money, business, health, ownership, planning, benefits, agreements, disputes, and decisions become one connected legal record that carries forward. Choose an area to see what governs it.

Home. The lease, the deed, the mortgage, the repair request, the sale.

The lease, the deed, and every notice stay answerable, with the deadline visible before it matters.

One example situation

FEMA and insurance on two fronts at once

Work. The offer, the handbook, the non-compete, the leave, the exit.

The offer and the policy become answerable before you sign, and the record stays yours after you leave.

One example situation

The clinician non-compete on the way out

Family. Consent, custody, care plans, support, and the plan for who decides.

The plans, authority, and information your family needs, in place before the moment arrives.

One example situation

Guardianship nomination for young kids

Money. Terms, notices, debt, default, and the letter that starts a clock.

Terms and notices become answerable, and the clock a letter starts is visible the day it arrives.

One example situation

Grandparent and imposter scam aftermath

Business. The entity, the owners, the contracts, the tax filings.

The company record stays answerable from formation forward, and professional judgment enters for the scope you choose.

One example situation

The handshake before incorporation

Healthcare. Access, consent forms, wishes, and the proxy who speaks for you.

Directives, consents, and the proxy who speaks for you, findable at 2 a.m.

One example situation

The advance directive nobody can find

Caregiving. Authority to act, benefits, leave, and the paper a bank will honor.

Authority to act is established and current before a bank, a hospital, or an agency asks for it.

One example situation

The POA the bank won't honor

Ownership. Title, warranty, deed, and transfer.

Title, deed, and transfer stay connected to the decisions they create.

One example situation

Inherited property with co-heir gridlock

Planning. The estate, the will, the trusts, the heirs.

The estate plan stays current, findable, and connected to the people who will need it.

One example situation

A small estate told it needs full probate

Benefits. Eligibility, the claim, the denial, the appeal.

The claim, the denial, and the appeal deadline stay visible, with the record ready to support them.

One example situation

A denied health-insurance appeal

Agreements. Promises, terms, scope, and what was signed.

The reason you signed stays with the contract, for the day someone asks why.

One example situation

The contract you sign every week

Disputes. Evidence, facts, dates, and the record of what happened.

Facts, dates, and evidence are organized from the first question, and every claim you make is checked before it is sent.

One example situation

A surprise medical bill that's wrong

Decisions. Options, risk, the advice you got, and the next step.

Grounded options from the record and governing law, and the choice stays yours.

One example situation

Understand the term sheet before the clock starts

The problem

## The legal market was built for matters a lawyer can profitably take.

72%

or more of California households in every income group had at least one civil legal problem in the past year.

State Bar of California, 2024

California Justice Gap Study

The bands run from 72 to 75 percent; legal problems are income-independent, an average of six problems per household.

Everything else is too important to ignore, too small for full-service counsel, and too complex for a chatbot. Most people meet the law through an inherited assumption: that an individual must either hand a legal matter over to a professional or navigate it alone.

That assumption creates a false binary:

1. 01

Hire a professional to own the understanding and the process.

2. or

3. 02

Navigate alone, with fragmented information, generic forms, and little support.

Personal Law creates a third path.

Own your legal context and understanding. Act at the level that fits you. Bring in qualified professionals where they add judgment or protection.

Legal Dependency forces people to start from zero every time, pay again for context they already had, recognize risks late, and make consequential decisions without the benefit of what they already learned.

How it sounds in everyday life

01 / 12 · Confusion

> I have read this letter four times, and I still don't know what it's asking of me.

02 / 12 · Fear

> I know I am right. I have no idea how to prove it.

03 / 12 · Dread

> There is a date on this notice, and I do not know what happens if I miss it.

04 / 12 · Night

> It is 2 a.m., and there is no one to ask.

05 / 12 · Isolation

> Everyone I know has an opinion. Nobody I know has an answer.

06 / 12 · Shame

> I run a business. I cannot read my own lease.

07 / 12 · Cost

> I can pay for an hour. The problem is going to take months.

08 / 12 · Exhaustion

> Every time I get help, I start by telling the whole story again.

09 / 12 · Powerless

> Someone else decides what happens next. I am the one it happens to.

10 / 12 · Regret

> I had the documents the whole time. I never knew what they meant.

11 / 12 · Resignation

> I let it go, because fighting it would cost more than losing.

12 / 12 · Stuck

> The lawyer's work ended. My problem did not.

Legal services have historically been built around lawyers. Personal Law is built around the individual.

01

A living record of your legal life.

02

The intelligence to understand it.

03

Human judgment when you decide it matters.

Personal Law gives individuals an ongoing ability to understand, organize, and manage legal matters directly.

What Briefcase gives you

## The wealthy and large institutions have always had legal infrastructure. Briefcase puts it in everyone’s hands.

Legal capability should not begin with a crisis. A legal foundation is a private, intelligent system that makes the documents, obligations, decisions, and rights governing your life understandable, answerable, coordinated, and ready for action.

01

Understand the situation.

02

You remain in control.

03

Always have a path forward.

A federal court has already named the gap

> …as large firms pour thousands of dollars into enterprise-grade AI and make their use of AI more secure, efficient, effective, and powerful, how will a pro se litigant or a litigant who cannot afford big-ticket legal services and better AI keep up?

Magistrate Judge Maritza Dominguez Braswell, for the court

Morgan v. V2X, Inc., D. Colo., No. 1:25-cv-01991, 2026

> …this provision will (at least for now) bar the parties from using most, if not all, mainstream low-to-no-cost AI to process Confidential Information. This type of restriction disadvantages pro se litigants.

Magistrate Judge Maritza Dominguez Braswell, for the court

Morgan v. V2X, Inc., D. Colo., No. 1:25-cv-01991, 2026

This is Briefcase.

Briefcase exists to close that gap. Corporations buy these protections from enterprise vendors. Briefcase runs on the same terms, priced like the AI tools you already use.

So the other side’s files can come in. Every confidential document a corporation produces to you has a private place to be read, searched, and understood, on the terms the court set, with the written proof of those terms in your hands.

The terms

## A federal court set the bar for AI in a lawsuit. Briefcase clears it for everyone.

1. 01

No model trains on what you enter.

   Ours or a provider's.

2. 02

   Nothing kept by the model.

Zero retention, by contract with every provider.

3. 03

   Nothing passed to third parties.

Nothing disclosed beyond delivering the service.

4. 04

   Your data deleted on request.

A deletion cascade that leaves no stranded copy.

Each by contract.

[Read the ruling on the legal boundaries page](https://nextbriefcase.com/legal-boundaries#record-title)

The law is complicated. Your ability to participate in it shouldn't be.

How it works

## Your legal life should not start over with every legal matter.

One record carries a matter through every stage: understand, choose, prepare, act, continue. Nothing restarts when the situation changes, so the context, the decisions, and the work stay where they were.

1. 01

   Understand

   Clarity from the first question.

2. 02

   Choose

You choose the strategy with eyes open.

3. 03

   Prepare

   Ready when it matters.

4. 04

   Act

   You move the matter forward.

5. 05

   Continue

Your record picks up where you left off.

Professional judgment

## Professional judgment is available at every stage. Bringing it in is always your call.

Briefcase requires flat-fee pricing for every limited-scope engagement. The professional sets the price and pays Briefcase a flat technology fee, never a share of it. For every engagement, Briefcase requires full price transparency, so you always know what the service will cost before you decide.

1. 01

   Act independently

   No professional fee.

2. 02

   Limited-scope engagement

   Transparent flat-fee pricing.

3. 03

   Engage full representation

The full fee structure, stated before you accept.

Who it’s for

## A serious tool, on the side of the person holding it.

One legal foundation, shaped to the people who live with the consequences: individuals, families, founders, businesses, the professionals who serve them, and the partners who serve the people lawyers turn away.

- Individuals

Know what governs your life before it becomes a legal problem.

Standing legal capability across work, housing, contracts, insurance, finances, rights, and life transitions, so you stay ready.

  [Briefcase for individuals](https://nextbriefcase.com/individuals)

- Families

Put the plans, authority, and information your family needs in place before the moment arrives.

A family navigates caregiving, children, property, health, emergencies, transitions, incapacity, and death without reconstructing its legal life at the worst possible moment.

  [Briefcase for families](https://nextbriefcase.com/families)

- Startups & Founders

Build the company on a legal foundation you understand and control.

Ownership, control, IP, people, fundraising, governance, contracts, diligence, and exit remain legible and ready, and professional judgment arrives for the scope the founder chooses.

  [Briefcase for startups & founders](https://nextbriefcase.com/startups-and-founders)

- Business & Teams

Turn the documents your business runs on into an intelligent operating record.

Contracts, policies, obligations, procedures, playbooks, decisions, and what the team knows become one answerable operating record. Each function sees its own part, an authorized leader sees the whole, and the business owns all of it as it grows and reorganizes. Counsel works inside that record on the business's terms, and the business stays free to choose who that is, engagement by engagement.

  [Briefcase for business & teams](https://nextbriefcase.com/business-and-teams)

- Attorneys & Legal Professionals

Start with prepared clients. Find matters that fit your practice. Handle more work profitably.

Less time reconstructing context, more time applying judgment. Prepared clients, matters that fit, and one place for conflicts, scope, delivery, and payment.

[Briefcase for attorneys & legal professionals](https://nextbriefcase.com/attorneys)

- Access to justice and courts

Serve the people you have to turn away. Briefcase gives them a legal foundation of their own.

Capacity for partners. Preparation for courts. Legal aid, nonprofits, and advocates serve more of the people who come to them, and the people they have to turn away keep a private, grounded path. Courts see better-prepared filings from self-represented litigants and a clearer process, without endorsing or buying a private product. Access to justice widens where the system has the least to give.

Trust

## Trust you can verify.

Work grounded in the matter and governing law, with citations checked before use. Your data is yours; we do not train on your private legal content. Privacy at every step.

[How Briefcase protects the record](https://nextbriefcase.com/security)

01

Your legal work and data will never train an AI model, be sold or passed to a third party, or be used in advertising.

02

Privacy is something we build, not something we claim.

03

We protect your confidentiality to the fullest extent the law allows.

04

What Briefcase never kept, it cannot hand over. What you sealed, no one at Briefcase can read.

People already in market for help.

> For those who cannot afford a lawyer, AI can help. It drives new, highly accessible tools that provide answers to basic questions, including where to find templates and court forms, how to fill them out, and where to bring them for presentation to the judge—all without leaving home. These tools have the welcome potential to smooth out any mismatch between available resources and urgent needs in our court system.

Questions

## The questions people ask first.

[Every question and answer](https://nextbriefcase.com/faq)

### What is Personal Law?

Personal Law is the technology, knowledge, tools, professional access, records, and intelligence an individual uses to understand and manage the law as it affects their life. It gives individuals an ongoing ability to understand, organize, and manage legal matters directly, with professional judgment available when the person decides it matters.

### Why would I need this when nothing is wrong?

The agreements and decisions that govern a life are already operating. Briefcase makes them understandable, keeps changes and deadlines visible, and keeps you ready before those agreements become urgent.

### Does Briefcase train AI models on my documents or conversations?

No. Your documents, notes, and AI conversations are never used to train or fine-tune any model, ours or a provider's. Briefcase does not sell legal data or use it for advertising. Matter content routes only to zero-data-retention models whose providers retain no prompts or completions to train on or disclose.

### Is what I put in Briefcase privileged?

Briefcase treats everything in a matter as protected work product. The rule protects what a party prepares in anticipation of litigation, and many courts agree. Whether a court agrees in your case turns on the facts and the forum, so Briefcase keeps the facts you need to claim the protection, and produces the document to file.

[The position, and the courts behind it](https://nextbriefcase.com/legal-boundaries#record-title)

### If a court orders Briefcase to hand over my conversations, what can it produce?

What Briefcase never kept, it cannot hand over. Your conversations with Briefcase leave no transcript: not a copy, not a summary, not a topic. Briefcase keeps that a conversation happened, when, with which model, and what it cost. An answer joins your matter only when you save it. What Briefcase can disclose is bounded by what it retains and can read. It requires valid legal process and discloses only what the process compels.

### Does Briefcase replace a lawyer?

No. Briefcase gives you grounded information, the options that fit your circumstances and why each one does, plain education in context, and drafting help. It does not provide legal advice or represent anyone. Individualized legal advice comes from a professional authorized in your jurisdiction, within an engagement you choose. Briefcase stays with the question, and it never pretends to be a lawyer.
